Ligature-resistant bathroom fixtures for a purpose-built forensic rehabilitation facility at Concord Hospital

Burudyara Forensic Rehabilitation Mental Health Unit is a purpose-built forensic rehabilitation facility located within the Concord Centre for Mental Health in Sydney. Developed as part of the NSW Government's $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program, the project expands forensic mental health services with a contemporary, recovery-oriented environment that balances safety, dignity and therapeutic care. The facility provides 42 individual ensuite bedrooms across low and medium secure accommodation, supporting consumers as they progress through their rehabilitation journey.

Designed by NBRS Architecture in partnership with Health Infrastructure NSW and Sydney Local Health District, Burudyara was shaped through extensive consultation with clinicians, carers and people with lived experience. The design emphasises a welcoming, home-like environment, incorporating therapeutic outdoor spaces, self-catered accommodation, and facilities that encourage recovery while maintaining the security requirements of a forensic mental health setting.

Challenge

Forensic rehabilitation environments present some of the most demanding design requirements in healthcare. Bathroom fixtures and fittings must minimise ligature risks, withstand intensive use, resist tampering and support operational safety, while contributing to a therapeutic environment that feels less institutional and more residential.

At Burudyara, the project team sought to create a modern rehabilitation setting that aligned with contemporary models of care, balancing stringent security requirements with a focus on recovery, wellbeing and dignity. Fixtures needed to deliver:
