Supporting Safe and Dementia-Friendly Care Environments
Capecare Busselton is a leading aged care and dementia support facility in Western Australia, providing specialised care for residents with complex physical and cognitive needs. The project focused on creating a safe, supportive and intuitive bathroom environment that enhances resident independence while reducing risks for both users and carers.
The Challenge
Bathrooms in dementia and aged care environments must balance safety, usability and clarity. Residents may experience reduced mobility, dexterity or cognitive function, making standard fixtures difficult to operate or recognise. This can lead to misuse, increased reliance on carers and a higher risk of injury.
The Solution
Galvin worked with Interite to supply a tailored combination of assistive tapware and dementia-friendly sanitaryware designed to improve safety, ease of use and visual clarity for residents.
Key benefits:
- Red accents enhance recognition, supporting residents with dementia or vision impairment to use bathrooms safely and more independently
- High-contrast indicators clearly differentiate hot and cold controls, reducing scalding risk and enabling residents to use fixtures independently
- Short pin lever handles enable easy, intuitive operation for users with limited strength or dexterity
- Robust design suited to high-use aged care environments
- Lead free construction ensures compliance with Australian drinking water requirements
Outcome
The result is a safer, more user-friendly bathroom environment that promotes independence, dignity and confidence for residents, while improving safety and efficiency for carers. Backed by Galvin’s expertise in aged care and healthcare environments, the solution delivers reliable, compliant performance aligned with best-practice dementia-friendly design.
