Supporting Safety and Dignity in Education 

Coreen School is a School for Specific Purposes (SSP) in Western Sydney, catering for approximately 70 students from Years 5 – 12 with medium to high support needs, including autism, intellectual disabilities, and complex behavioural challenges. The school provides a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment where every student is recognised and supported to achieve their full potential.

The recent refurbishment focused on upgrading bathroom and hygiene facilities to meet the highest standards of safety and dignity for students who require additional support. The design brief emphasised:

• Normalisation and Safety – creating spaces that feel homely and non-institutional while incorporating ligature-resistant, vandal-resistant fixtures to reduce risks and opportunities for self-harm 
• Durability and Hygiene – ensuring compliance with NSW Education standards and Australian Standards for accessibility and hygiene

These upgrades complement Coreen’s broader commitment to wellbeing and life skills education, which includes programs like Mini Woolies, music therapy, and community-based learning initiatives.

Galvin’s Contribution

Galvin Engineering supplied a range of specialised mental health products tailored for high-support environments, including:

• Ligature-resistant tapware and showers for student bathrooms
• Wallgate solid surface sanitaryware for durability and ease of cleaning

These solutions were chosen for their proven performance in high-support settings, ensuring safety, compliance, and longevity.

Outcome

The upgraded facilities at Coreen School provide safe, inclusive, and dignified spaces for students with complex needs. By integrating ligature-resistant technology with a normalised design approach, the project supports the school’s vision of helping every student feel safe, respected, and ready to learn.
