Rehabilitation and Resilience at the Heart of Queensland’s Largest Correctional Centre
The Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre, located near Gatton (QLD), is the state’s largest and most advanced high-security prison. Officially opened in 2025, the $965 million facility was developed to relieve significant overcrowding across Queensland’s correctional system, with capacity for over 1,500 inmates and employment for 800 staff, including custodial officers, health professionals, and rehabilitation specialists.
Spanning 22 hectares and comprising 40 buildings, the centre was designed with a strong emphasis on rehabilitation, safety, and modern infrastructure. It features a progression from cellular to residential-style accommodation to encourage pro-social behaviour, along with decentralised access to education, health, and support services to reduce people’s movement and improve outcomes.
Biophilic design principles—such as increased natural light, improved acoustics, and access to nature—were incorporated to minimise the institutional feel and support mental wellbeing for both inmates and staff. The facility also includes Queensland’s first Complex Behaviours Unit, a 24-bed specialist area for prisoners with chronic mental health conditions.
As a landmark infrastructure project, the Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre sets a new benchmark for custodial environments in Australia, balancing security with rehabilitation-focused design to support safer communities and reduce reoffending.
