Creating Safer, Healing Spaces
Monash Medical Centre in Clayton is undergoing a $535 million redevelopment, which includes significant upgrades to its mental health facilities. As one of Victoria’s busiest hospitals, Monash provides specialist psychiatric services for adults aged 18–65, including acute inpatient care and community mental health programs.
The refurbishment focuses on P Block, home to the psychiatric inpatient unit, and aims to create a safe, therapeutic environment that supports recovery while meeting the highest standards of safety and compliance. The design incorporates:
- Modernised patient bedrooms and bathrooms
- Enhanced communal spaces to encourage social interaction and wellbeing
- Improved observation and staff areas for better care delivery
This upgrade is part of Monash Health’s commitment to delivering world-class mental health care in Melbourne’s southeast.
Challenges
Mental health environments require a delicate balance between safety, dignity, and normalisation. Key challenges included:
- Preventing self-harm through ligature-resistant fixtures
- Ensuring durability and hygiene in high-use areas
- Creating spaces that feel welcoming and non-institutional
- Maintaining compliance with AusHFG Mental Health Guidelines
Galvin’s Contribution
