Supporting Age-Appropriate Mental Health Care at Nepean Hospital

The Nepean Hospital Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Unit is a purpose-designed inpatient facility providing specialist mental healthcare for young people aged 12 to 17 across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Developed as part of NSW's statewide mental health infrastructure program, the facility provides dedicated spaces that support treatment, recovery, learning and family involvement, recognising that the needs of young people differ significantly from those of adult mental health patients.

The Challenge

Designing for adolescent mental health requires more than the safety considerations associated with inpatient mental healthcare. Facilities must provide a therapeutic environment that feels appropriate for young people while accommodating education, recreation, family engagement and clinical care. The project required tapware and sanitaryware that could support a safe and durable healthcare environment while contributing to spaces that felt welcoming, functional and suited to the needs of young patients.

Our Contribution

Galvin supplied a coordinated range of tapware and sanitaryware designed specifically for mental health environments. The selected solutions incorporated ligature-resistant design principles and durable materials suitable for the demands of a specialist healthcare facility, while maintaining familiar forms and functionality that help reduce the institutional feel often associated with inpatient settings.

For adolescents receiving inpatient care, the built environment plays an important role in supporting comfort, dignity and everyday routines. By combining safety-focused design with products that closely resemble those found in mainstream healthcare and residential settings, the specification contributed to a more welcoming and age-appropriate environment without compromising the operational requirements of the facility.

The consistent specification of tapware and sanitaryware throughout patient wet areas also supports ease of maintenance, long-term durability and a coordinated approach to safety across the facility.

Outcome

The completed CAMHS Unit provides a purpose-designed environment for young people requiring specialist inpatient mental health care. Through a consistent specification of mental health tapware and sanitaryware, the project achieves a balance between safety, durability and everyday usability, supporting an environment that is appropriate for adolescent care while meeting the practical requirements of a modern healthcare facility.
