Innovating Mental Health Design for Safer Environments
The Better Bedroom Initiative, commissioned by DIMHN and led by Oxford Architect’s Matthew Balaam, aims to raise awareness of good mental health design, stimulate innovation, and improve environments for service users. This initiative showcases how thoughtful design can enhance safety, dignity, and comfort in mental health facilities.
What’s Featured in the Better Bedroom

- Collaborative Approach: Products were selected through a “Dragon’s Den” style process, ensuring the best solutions for mental health environments.
- Exhibition Launch: Better Bedroom 2 was unveiled at the DIMHN Exhibition and will be featured at:
- Mental Health & Dementia Facilities Forum (22–23 September, Whittlebury Hall)
