Common Terminology

Vandal
The Oxford Dictionary defines a vandal as a person who deliberately destroys or damages public property.

Vandal Resistant and Anti-Vandal
The terms vandal resistant and anti-vandal have many varying definitions, and are often used interchangeably, especially in educational, healthcare and public settings.

Vandal resistant and anti-vandal refer to features or designs incorporated into products and spaces specifically aimed at deterring or preventing acts of vandalism or intentional damage to property. These features can include durable materials, robust construction, rounded edges, concealed components, reinforced structures, and tamper-resistant fixtures.

By implementing vandal resistant and anti-vandal measures, the risk of property damage, disruption of services, and associated costs can be significantly reduced. It is important because it helps protect infrastructure, ensures the smooth operation of essential services, and contributes to creating safe and well-maintained environments for everyone to enjoy.

Vandal Resistant and Anti-Vandal Products
The selection of suitable products for use in facilities and public areas is the responsibility of building designers, facility owners, facility managers, and builders.

In Australia, currently there are no official standards for building designers or product manufacturers to refer to regarding vandal resistant and anti-vandal product design.

At Galvin Engineering, we incorporate anti-vandal elements like durable materials, robust construction, rounded edges, concealed components, reinforced structures, and tamper-resistant fixtures, to minimise the risk of vandalism.

To ensure our products are best in class, our Research and Development team test our products inhouse, and rely on the knowledge and resources of our trusted supplier partners, like Wallgate in the UK (ISO 19712-3: 2022 Plastics — Decorative solid surfacing materials; Part 3: Determination of properties — Solid surface shapes).
