Modern Mental Health Infrastructure for Regional and Remote Communities
The Broken Hill Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit (AMHIU) Redevelopment forms part of the NSW Government's $700 million Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program, delivering a contemporary, purpose-built facility that expands access to mental health services for the Far West community. Located on the Broken Hill Health Service campus, the redevelopment provides modern, therapeutic and culturally safe environments designed to support consumers, families, carers and healthcare staff.
The Challenge
Mental health facilities in regional and remote Australia face unique challenges, requiring environments that support recovery, dignity and wellbeing while remaining robust, safe and practical for healthcare staff. The existing facilities in Broken Hill were no longer aligned with contemporary models of care, prompting the development of a new purpose-built inpatient unit designed to better serve the needs of the local community. The project called for a facility that could deliver contemporary mental health care within a culturally responsive setting. Extensive consultation with health staff, carers, community representatives and Aboriginal stakeholders informed a design focused on therapeutic outcomes, connection to Country and patient wellbeing.
Our Solution
Galvin supplied a range of specialised healthcare tapware and bathroom fixtures for the new Broken Hill Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit, including ligature-resistant solutions designed for mental health and behavioural healthcare environments. Installed throughout patient and staff areas, these products contributed to the provision of contemporary healthcare spaces while delivering the durability and performance required in demanding clinical settings. The new eight-bed facility includes single patient rooms with dedicated ensuites, communal lounge and dining spaces, a sensory modulation room, activity and exercise areas, and landscaped outdoor environments inspired by Aboriginal culture and connection to Country. Together, these carefully considered spaces create a welcoming, therapeutic and culturally responsive environment that supports recovery and wellbeing.
