Designing Safer Inpatient Mental Health Environments at The Alfred

The refurbishment of The Alfred's Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU), Intensive Care Area (ICA) and Low Dependency Unit (LDU) has delivered a modernised mental health environment that supports patient wellbeing, staff safety and contemporary models of care. Located within one of Victoria's leading acute healthcare facilities, the project included extensive ligature resistant upgrades aimed at creating safer, more therapeutic inpatient spaces for people receiving mental health treatment. Architects Hames Sharley and Studio BE Architects worked alongside Connellan Industries to transform the ward environment while maintaining the operational requirements of a busy hospital setting.

Prioritising Safety Without Compromising Dignity

Mental health facilities present unique design challenges. Fixtures and fittings must minimise opportunities for self-harm while remaining robust, intuitive to use and comfortable for patients. The Alfred's refurbishment sought to balance these requirements through a considered design approach that reduced environmental risks while supporting a more welcoming and recovery-focused setting.

To assist in achieving these objectives, Galvin supplied a range of ligature-resistant tapware and bathroom fixtures specifically designed for behavioural health and high-care environments. By eliminating potential attachment points and incorporating tamper-resistant features, the selected products support safer patient bathrooms and amenity spaces while helping healthcare providers meet stringent behavioural health design requirements.

Purpose-Built Solutions for Behavioural Health Settings

Throughout the redevelopment, Galvin's specialised mental health products were selected to address the complex needs of an acute psychiatric environment. Ligature-resistant basin outlets and fixtures were installed to minimise opportunities for misuse while providing reliable day-to-day performance in a demanding clinical setting.

The project also incorporated pneumatic flushing technology, delivering a robust, water-efficient flushing solution without exposed electronic controls. Combined with specialist floor waste and bathroom accessories designed for behavioural health applications, these products contribute to an environment where safety is embedded into every detail of the patient experience.

Temperature-controlled water delivery systems were also included to support patient comfort and reduce scalding risks, helping ensure the facility remains both safe and functional for patients, visitors and staff alike.
