From Ward 21 to Ngā Wai Ngāro: Raising the Bar for Acute Mental Health Care

Ngā Wai Ngāro is a purpose-built $66.6 million acute mental health facility designed to deliver safer, more therapeutic care for tāngata whaiora (service users) and their whānau in the Manawatū region. The unit provides 28 modern patient bedrooms, therapy rooms, a gym, generous natural light, outdoor courtyards, and dedicated family spaces—features intentionally curated to support recovery and dignity.

The name Ngā Wai Ngāro refers to the sacred, unseen waters flowing beneath Papatūānuku, grounding the model of care in a cultural narrative developed with mana whenua (Rangitāne), clinicians, and the local community. Artwork and landscape elements reinforce this narrative, creating a homely, non‑institutional environment that strengthens cultural connection and wellbeing.

The facility replaces the ageing Ward 2 with a “step change” in design and care. A transition plan ensures continuity of care as services move into the new unit.

Design Priorities

• Safety & normalisation: Homely interiors and daylight‑rich spaces, combined with secure environments that reduce risk and support calmer, therapeutic experiences.
• Whānau‑centred care: Dedicated areas for family engagement, recognising the vital role of whānau in recovery.
• Cultural integrity: A care model anchored in local kaupapa and artwork, fostering identity, dignity, and connection.
• Fit‑for‑purpose replacement: A modern unit designed to address the shortcomings of Ward 21 and lift safety and quality standards across the region.
